The journey of appreciation for Smile Foundation’s I Am Kalam continues as the film won 10th Max Stardust Award for Best Actor in the Search Light category. Gulshan Grover who played the role of Bhatti the dhaba owner in the movie won the Best Actors award for his outstanding performance in his role. I am Kalam so far has won 19 national and international awards including the National Award and FILMFARE Award. The accolades and appreciation I am Kalam has received from the world over proves that the objective Smile Foundation had conceptualized I am Kalam with, has reached out to the people around the world and has gained the attention for the cause of Sending every child to school. The Stardust Awards is an annual award ceremony to celebrate new talent in the industry as well as congratulating the current stars. This award first began in 2003, by the annual Stardust movie Magazine.

After winning 17 prestigious awards, Smile Foundation’s I am Kalam has won the Filmfare Award for being the Best Story of the year. The acclaims and accomplishments the film has received so far have been primarily because of the cause it propagates – children’s right to education and freedom from illiteracy. The film’s success proves that the cause of children and their education brings together people across the globe irrespective of their age, gender, taste and ethnicity.
This is the 57th year of the awards and is often referred to as Hindi film industry’s equivalent to the Oscars. The award is presented annually by the Times of India Group to honour both artistic and technical excellence of professionals in the Hindi film industry. The Filmfare ceremony is one of the oldest and most prominent film events given for Hindi films in India. The awards were first introduced in 1954, the same year as the National Film Awards.

I am Kalam has been nominated in the categories of Best Child Actor, Best Debutante Director and Best Story in the 18th Annual Screen Awards. I am Kalam is competing with big banner films like Ra.One, Delhi Belly, Yeh Saali Zindagi and Dhobi Ghaat. With protagonist Harsh Mayar having won the 58th National Award for the Best Child Artiste and director Nila Madhab Panda having the prestigious Aravindan Puraskaram already, the whole cast and crew is hopeful that the film will come out as a winner in all the three categories. The film has already won 18 national and international awards.

Smile Foundation will be taking this movement to 100 leading colleges and institutes and 2500 leading schools across India to ensure mass participation and sensitization. After a special promo screening of the film, a quiz related to the film was conducted and I am Kalam goodies were given to winners. A slogan writing competition based on child labour and mandatory child education was also conducted. This sensitization drive was closed with all the students signing of pledges for the cause of Sending Every Child to School.

Leading colleges, management and technical institutes across the country are joining the Kalam drive and this time it was students of NISS IIT Delhi. On the 8th of August, I am Kalam reached the NISS IIT Delhi campus for a special promo screening of the film. This was followed by a group discussion about the ways to fight the grave issue of Child Labour in the country. Also an IAK quiz was conducted for the students and was participated by all. This sensitization campaign was also adorned with signing of pledges for the cause of Sending Every Child o School.

National Institute of Fashion Technology, Delhi, is the newest member of the Kalam drive. A sensitization drive was conducted where the students were showed a screener of the film and a quiz was based on the film was conducted. A Tie the Tie contest was also conducted that became quite a hit. All the students were very enthusiastic about joining the drive of Kalam and to begin with, they all joined Kalam on the facebook page www.facebook.com/kforkalam All the students also wrote slogans for the cause that “Every Child should go to School”.

The next member for the Kalam drive is IMT Ghaziabad. A sensitization drive was conducted where a special screening was done for the students in the IMT Ghaziabad campus. After the screening a session was conducted wherein groups of students came forward and put forth their take on how child labour can be eradicated and education can be encouraged. Among fun activities were a quiz related to the film and a Tie the Tie contest that was thoroughly enjoyed and actively participated by the students. The drive was brought to a close with all the students signing a pledge for the cause of Sending Every Child to School.

I am Kalam and its message to Send Every Child To Child to School is also being promoted by Smile Foundation’s partner NGOs along with schools and colleges across the country.
The Mission Education projects of Smile Foundation has been doing a month long activity around the film’s message in order to give the children beneficiaries an opportunity to know about the Former Indian President, the importance of education, their right to go to school and daring to dream the impossible and become big in life. Regular science exhibitions, drawing competitions, etc based on an I am Kalam theme were conducted at all the Mission Education project centres so that the message in the film also percolates down to the children from the marginalized sections and eventually to their families too.

I am Kalam was screened for 300 school goers in UK at the Model United Nations Summit. After the screening the students were made aware of all the Millennium Development Goals and how they are affecting the slum communities in India. They were also given insights of the main issues in the developing country like India and how Smile Foundation is working towards achieving these Millennium Development Goals.
